SilGel® - Silicone Gel & Silicone sheets Info

Silicone is the clinical gold standard for scar treatment and scar prevention having demonstrated clinical efficacy over all other forms of topical treatments and is recommended by the International Advisory Panel on Scar Management.

Purpose: SilGel® softens surgical incisions and improves colour, size, and texture of the scar. SilGel® can also enhance the results from Keloid scars and burns as well as Hypertrophic scars.

How long after surgery should I apply  Silgel® or Silgel® Sheet?
Apply Silgel once the wounds have completely closed up. This is generally 1/2 weeks.
For open surgery - apply once the sutures have been trimmed or removed. This is usually two weeks after surgery.

How long before I see an improvement in my scar?
Scar management can vary depending on the person and scar. Whilst some improvement might be observed within days of using Silgel® or Silgel® Sheet, the best results are often achieved during a period of 2 - 4 months, although this can sometimes be much longer.

How do you apply the Sigel Sheets?
Cut the sheet with scissors if needed to the desired length. Product should overlap edge of scar by 1/4”. Apply after peeling the plastic protective sheeting from one of the sides of the silicone. Place the sticky side against your scar.  SilGel Sheets are durable, comfortable and re-usable, ideal for day and night use.

How much Silgel® gel do I need to use at any one time?
Silgel® gel should be used sparingly, as a small amount can be massaged well over the affected area.
We recommend applying once or twice a day after shower.

How quickly does Silgel® take to dry?
If used as recommended as above, Silgel® should dry in a matter of minutes.

If I apply more Silgel® than recommended, will the effect be enhanced?
No. If an excessive amount of Silgel® is applied, the drying time is prolonged. It might also be necessary to clean off any excess. Whilst there is no adverse effect, the beneficial effect is no different than if used as directed.

Is Silgel® visible?
When applied as directed, Silgel® creates a thin protective barrier that is almost invisible.

Can I cover Silgel® with cosmetics?
Once dry, cosmetics may be applied and can be used to further enhance the aesthetic appearance.

For how long does the Silgel® Sheet last?
Used as directed, Silgel® Sheet can be expected to last for a few months.

How often should I wash the Silgel® Sheet?
The Silgel® Sheet should be washed at least on a daily basis with a mild soap solution. It should be rinsed well and dried by shaking the sheet and then patting dry with a smooth fabric cloth before re-applying.

Do I need to use adhesive tape or bandage to secure the Silgel® Sheet?
Although there is no adhesive layer on the Silgel® Sheet, it has an inherent adhesivity which provides a good 'cling' property to the skin. However, you may need to stabilise and secure the sheet in position with a strip of hypoallergenic tape.

Is Silgel® and Silgel® Sheet suitable for use on all the family?
Yes. The purity of Silgel® products is assured. Silgel® products are safe for use on adults and children alike.

When would it be appropriate to use Silgel® rather than Silgel® Sheet?
Although it really depends on the person’s preference, patients who had breast procedures done find using SilGel Sheets more easy to use than applying gel every day.
